CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds state is home to nearly 4,600 tech businesses and 50,000-plus tech professionals

Topeka, Kan. – Technology industry employment in Kansas recorded a modest decline in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.

The tech industry workforce declined by an estimated 841 jobs, a drop of 1.7 percent. Kansas is home to an estimated 49,762 tech industry workers.

Technology occupations across all other industries in Kansas – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 63,400 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 4.9 percent ($7.3 billion) of the overall state economy.

The annualized average wage for a tech industry worker in Kansas was an estimated $79,400 in 2016, 81 percent higher than the average state wage ($43,800).

Other Key Findings

• An estimated 4,592 tech business establishments are located in Kansas.
• Among the leading tech occupations in the state are computer user support specialists (7,910), network and computer systems administrators (5,220) and application software developers (4,480).
• The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the categories of computer systems design and IT services (+ 13.3 percent), Internet services (+ 8.6 percent) and R&D and testing labs (3.9 percent).
• Employers across the state posted an estimated 4,063 job openings for tech occupations in Q4 2016.
