New Report Offers Details on Technology Industry in Iowa

CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds state is home to 4,200 tech businesses and 45,000 tech professionals

Des Moines, Iowa – Technology industry employment in Iowa recorded a modest decline in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.

The tech industry workforce declined by an estimated 834 jobs, a drop of 1.8 percent. Iowa is home to an estimated 45,068 tech industry workers.

Technology occupations across all other industries in Iowa – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 62,500 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 4 percent ($7 billion) of the overall state economy.

The annualized average wage for a tech industry worker in Iowa was an estimated $77,600 in 2016, 75 percent higher than the average state wage ($44,400).

Other Key Findings

  • An estimated 4,234 tech business establishments are located in Iowa.
  • Among the leading tech occupations in the state are application software developers (7,380), computer systems analysts (5,300) and computer user support specialists (3,870).
  • The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the categories of computer systems design and IT services (+ 7.1 percent) and engineering services (+ 7 percent).
  • Employers across the state posted an estimated 6,123 job openings for tech occupations in Q4 2016.
