New Report Offers Details on Technology Industry in Idaho

CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds state is home to 2,900 tech businesses and 32,000-plus tech professionals

Boise, Idaho – Technology industry employment in Idaho recorded a modest gain in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.

The tech industry workforce expanded by an estimated 566 jobs, a gain of 1.8 percent. Idaho is home to an estimated 32,802 tech industry workers.

Technology occupations across all other industries in Idaho – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 29,000 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 7.6 percent ($5 billion) of the overall state economy.

The annualized average wage for a tech industry worker in Idaho was an estimated $83,400 in 2016, 114 percent higher than the average state wage ($39,100).

Other Key Findings

  • An estimated 2,941 tech business establishments are located in Idaho.
  • Among the leading tech occupations in the state are computer user support specialists (2,540), application software developers (2,330) and electronics engineers (1,680).
  • The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the categories of computer systems design and IT services (+ 13 percent), semiconductor manufacturing (+ 4.7 percent) and engineering services (+ 4.4 percent).
  • Employers across the state posted an estimated 1,767 job openings for tech occupations in Q4 2016.
