New Report Offers Details on Technology Industry in Alaska

CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds state is home to 900 tech businesses


Juneau, Alaska
– Technology industry employment in Alaska declined slightly in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.

The tech industry workforce declined by 2.2 percent as employers trimmed an estimated 234 jobs. The state is still home to an estimated 10,600 tech industry workers,

Technology occupations across all other industries in Alaska – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 11,500 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 4.2 percent ($2.2 billion) of the overall state economy.

The annualized average wage for a tech industry worker in Alaska was an estimated $79,600 in 2016, 47 percent higher than the average state wage ($54,200).

Other Key Findings

  • The state is home to an estimated 912 tech business establishments.
  • The tech industry employs an estimated 3.2 percent of the overall state workforce.
  • Leading tech occupations include network and computer systems administrators (1,150), computer user support specialists (930) and mechanical engineers (630).
  • Employers posted an estimated 813 job openings for tech occupations in Q4 2016.
