CompTIA Statement on President Trump's State of the Union Address

Jan 31, 2018

WASHINGTON – CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association, released the following statement from CompTIA’s executive vice president for public advocacy Elizabeth Hyman regarding remarks by President Donald Trump in last night’s State of the Union address:

“Last night the President outlined a vision of American renewal that focuses on critical building blocks to our economic future such as workforce development, fair trade deals, and rebuilding American infrastructure. We welcome this focus and look forward to working with the Administration to achieve progress on all of these fronts. We sincerely hope that as matters proceed in each of these vital areas, that the Administration and Congress will agree that technology must infuse each of them.

“Currently the tech industry employs more than seven million people in the United States, with that number expected to grow considerably over the next few years. To keep up with the demand of technology jobs, career and technical education must include more than just the traditional trades. We must provide education, training and apprenticeship programs to prepare workers for crucial jobs in IT, such as computer technicians, network administrators and cybersecurity specialists.

“We also encourage the administration to ensure that all trade deals should incorporate solid principles for the digital economy. And any discussion of infrastructure must incorporate smart technology into their plans to ensure our towns, cities and states have modern networks that support innovation. While not explicitly mentioned in last night’s address we trust that a technologically driven economy will be front of mind for policy makers. CompTIA will continue to work with the Administration and our allies on Capitol Hill from both political parties to ensure that the technology industry and the workforce it depends on continues to grow, remains globally competitive, and leads the world in innovation.”
