CompTIA Advocacy Webinar Examines the Future of the Online Marketplace

Jul 2, 2018

Free event will explore impact, outcomes of U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling on sales taxes and online retailers

Washington, D.C. – The impact of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on online retailers, sales taxes and the $450 billion-plus U.S. e-commerce market will be examined during a free webinar presented by CompTIA, the leading technology industry trade association, on Wednesday, July 11.

A panel of legislative and tax experts will explore “The Future of the Online Marketplace” beginning at 3 p.m. Eastern on July 11.

The Supreme Court ruled last month in the case of South Dakota v. Wayfair that online retailers can be required to collect sales taxes even in states where they have no physical presence. The ruling reversed a 1992 decision that allowed states to levy taxes only in those businesses with a brick-and-mortar location within the state.

“The high court’s decision to overturn the physical presence standard has created an uncertain marketplace for buyers and sellers,” said Elizabeth Hyman, CompTIA’s executive vice president for public advocacy. “Our panel of experts will discuss what this new tax landscape means and what policymakers may do next.”

Scheduled to participate in the CompTIA webinar are:

  • Joseph Bishop-Henchman, executive vice president, The Tax Foundation;
  • Nikki E. Dobay, senior tax counsel, Council on State Taxation;
  • Erick D. Harris, legislative counsel to U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio); and
  • Stephen P. Kranz, partner, McDermott, Will & Emery.

“The Future of the Online Marketplace” webinar is free. To register, please visit https://www.comptia.org/events/webinars/registration?eventid=vd071118.
