CompTIA Commends House Passage of Email Privacy Act

Feb 8, 2017

ECPA Reform will provide much needed privacy protections to consumers

WASHINGTON - CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association, the world’s leading technology association, commends the U.S. House of Representatives for unanimously passing the Email Privacy Act (H.R. 387). Its passage would close the Electronic Communications Privacy Act’s (ECPA) current loophole allowing law enforcement access to the contents of emails and other stored communications over 180 days old without a warrant.

“After the House unanimously passed the Email Privacy act last April, we’re excited to see them move so quickly to pass this important piece of legislation again in the 115th Congress,” said Elizabeth Hyman, CompTIA’s executive vice president for public advocacy. “Reforming ECPA to require a warrant for content is crucial to protecting Americans’ privacy, and we thank the House for passing the same version of the Email Privacy Act that received such strong support last year. We hope that after the overwhelming support this bill has received in the House, the Senate will quickly take up this legislation to protect our digital privacy.
