Cybersecurity Careers: How to Get Into Cybersecurity with CompTIA

Are you ready to advance your cybersecurity career? The CompTIA Cybersecurity Pathway will get you there. You'll prove to employers that you are the best candidate for the job by having the skills needed to protect their organization from cyberattacks and threats. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to get from point A to point B in your cybersecurity career. You've asked for an easier way to map it out.

In this video, we've simplified that process for you. Follow this pathway and we'll guide you through the real skills and knowledge you need to get the job done, get promoted and make a difference in the cybersecurity landscape. Not to mention, you'll also make some good money along the way. Here we go.

How to Start: Level One

Get your foot in the door with CompTIA Security+. The first step in your cybersecurity career path. Security+ is the leading global certification that proves you have the core security skills to do the job. Skills like monitoring and securing hybrid environments or identifying, analyzing and responding to security events. These hands-on skills will open the door to more opportunities.

As you move from IT support into cybersecurity, you should have two years of experience under your belt. In an entry-level cybersecurity role, you can earn anywhere from $85,000 to $95,000 a year. More than 600,000 IT pros have earned Security+, having learned how to problem-solve a wider variety of today's complex security issues. Your cybersecurity career begins with Security+.

Level Two

To move up to the next level in cybersecurity, your next step will be to become proficient in more specialized skills. Learn through the CompTIA PenTest+ or CompTIA CySA+ certifications. At this level, you should have at least four years of experience. According to Cyberseek, intermediate-level positions can range from $91,000 to $104,000 a year.

CompTIA PenTest+ is ideal for cybersecurity professionals responsible for testing networks to make sure they're secure. PenTest+ will give you all the hands-on skills required for vulnerability and penetration testing. Plus, you'll have the required skills to customize assessments, report findings and recommend mitigation strategies. PenTest+ will help you stay one step ahead.

Level Three

Next up, the CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst, or CySA+, certification will teach you how to enable continuous security monitoring and how to respond to incidents. CySA+ is the only certification on the market that will give you the hands-on skills necessary to leverage threat detection techniques and to identify vulnerabilities. CySA+ will help take your threat-hunting skills to the next level.

Final Push

Finally, as you move up to the advanced cybersecurity level, you have CompTIA CASP+. This is equivalent to at least five to ten years of general, hands-on IT experience. Advanced-level salaries can range from $99,000 to $131,000 a year. CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner, or CASP+, is for IT pros with advanced knowledge but wish to keep working on the technical side of cybersecurity.

Unlike other certifications, CASP+ covers both security architecture and engineering. This means that you will have the skills needed to assess enterprise cyber readiness and design and implement the proper solutions for your organization, such as zero trust. Lead and improve the overall cybersecurity resiliency against the next attack with CASP+.
