Hoping to help at a more hands-on level, the IT Services and Support Community donated $5,000 to NPower, a group that brings the tech community together for social good, helps people at a disadvantage and focuses its support on nonprofits.
The annual charitable donation is a tradition for CompTIA: Each year, CompTIA’s 13 member communities and councils donate money to deserving IT-related charities. Money for the donations comes from the Creating IT Futures Foundation, the philanthropic arm of CompTIA.
The ITSS Community chose NPower because its members thought they might help recruit corporations to participate in career days and other special initiatives, or volunteer to be participants in career and training days.
“ITSS and the CITFF is proud to support NPower’s mission of building brighter futures for underserved young adults and veterans through free technology and professional skills training,” said Angel Pineiro Jr., chair of the ITSS Community and senior vice president of services for ASI System Integration Inc.
NPower, with locations in New York, Texas, San Francisco and Toronto, mobilizes the tech community and provides individuals, nonprofits and schools opportunities to build their technology skills. The mission is pursued through two programs, the Technology Services Corps and the Community Corps.
According to NPower, the Technology Service Corps builds brighter futures for underserved young adults and veterans through free technology and professional skills training. The program includes technical classes, mentoring from business leaders, internships and career development workshops at leading corporations and nonprofits, industry-recognized certifications as well as employment and alumni services. NPower says more than 80 percent of its alumni are employed or pursuing higher education within one year of graduation.
The Community Corpsis a skills-based volunteering program connecting technology professionals with high impact nonprofits and innovative education partners. Tech volunteers enable schools and nonprofits across the country to use technology more effectively and inspire the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
ITSS also chose NPower for its past work, including partnering with Girls Who Code and conducting career days with companies like New York Life and Digital Ready, an intensive professional development program by the New York Department of Education.
The community’s donation of $5,000 will help NPower hire a dedicated project manager for its technology programs.
“The Creating IT Futures Foundation helps individuals lacking in opportunity, to prepare for, secure, and be successful in IT careers. It also supports other organizations with similar goals by providing them with funding and sharing best practices. NPower joins this list of organizations,” said Pineiro.
