Current challenges in tech talent development

The talent gap, also known as the skills gap, is a challenge many employers are facing. As technology continues to evolve, employees have not kept up with the skills needed to meet an organization’s goals. Factors like rapidly evolving technology, a lack of employer training and talent solutions, and the challenge in defining candidate requirements have all contributed to the talent gap.

The talent gap looks different throughout the tech industry as well. For example, the rapid increase in cyber threats means tech teams need to be equipped with the latest skills to stay ahead of and respond to attacks. Market trends shared by Gov.UK highlight that in 2023, 50% of all UK businesses had a basic cyber security skills gap, while 33% had an advanced cyber security skills gap. These gaps are likely consistent across the entire EMEA region.

The unique goals of an organization will also influence the talent gap. For example, companies in healthcare, education, and non-tech-related industries may find themselves facing an unexpected talent gap when an incident like a data breach or network outage occurs. Tech teams that do not stay up to date on advances in their field open the door for costly business mistakes.

At CompTIA EMEA Member and Partner Conference, you’ll get a first-hand look at the current challenges facing the jobs market and how you can bolster your portfolio to help address market needs within the organizations and learners you serve.

Increase in skills-based hiring

Four-year and advanced degrees have always held their place in the workforce. But today, employers have shown a shift towards skills-based hiring practices. While traditional degrees can help employees seek higher level positions in tech, validation of specific skills are holding their own during the interview process. CompTIA’s Workforce and Learning Trends 2024 survey reveals that 49% of HR professionals agree that a skills-based approach to hiring is a “new and compelling strategy.”

Additionally, HR professionals have increased their reliance on industry-recognized technical certifications. The report highlights that 82% of industry-recognized technical certifications factor heavily into a company’s process when hiring tech talent.

Tech training in the age of AI

The boom of artificial intelligence and machine learning has also influenced today’s talent trends. From using AI to filter candidates, to leveraging AI in-house to help employees assess and meet their learning needs ––employers say AI holds a place in their company’s training and hiring practices.

CompTIA’s Workforce and Learning Trends shares that 88% of HR professionals expect to use more technology and data in human resource management. Corroborating CompTIA findings, Oliver Wyman Forum points out that in a survey of over 25,000 global workers, 60% of HR professionals view AI use in their organization in a positive light.
