The report provides an overview of trends, including the top locations, roles, and experience levels based on new and active job postings.  

From this report, you can find valuable insights to help you start your tech career or to further your career. This will show the most-desired tech employees, certifications that would make sense to get you started in tech, and even ways in which to push your tech career further toward expertise. 
 
The August report which reflects data through July of 2024, shows a slowdown in hiring across the sector. Despite the decline, which reflects national labor market trends, the report also reveals that skills-based hiring continues to be top of mind for employers. The most in-demand tech roles included software developers / engineers, IT project managers, data analysts, data scientists, and tech support specialists. Additionally, the most active roles in tech that do not require a 4-year degree include Network Support Specialists, IT Support Specialists, Network and Systems Administrators, Database Administrators, and Web and UI/UX Designers. Overall, there were nearly 176,324 new employer job postings and 471,000 active tech job postings in July.

Job postings by location (Metro) 

While the number of postings was down from June across the top cities, here are the ones with the largest volume of job postings in July. 

Washington DC: 12, 015 
New York: 9,826 
Dallas: 8,133 
Chicago: 6,134  

Job postings by location (State) 

Several states experienced growth in their tech job postings in July when compared to June. Oregon experienced the largest growth and these were the states behind its growth:  

California: 19,716  
Texas: 17,150  
Virginia: 11,068  
Florida: 8,840 
Illinois: 7,834  

Job posting by industry 

If you’re interested in pursuing a tech career in a different industry, below are the ones with the most tech job postings in July. Using this information can help you determine which certifications may be the most ideal for you to get started in a tech career. For example, utilizing overarching tech education like our A+ certification can help you get your start in any of these industries. 
 
Professional, scientific, and technical services: 46,154 
Administrative and support: 20,960 
Manufacturing: 16,997 
Finance and insurance: 12,429 
Information: 11,788 

Job postings by title 

Hiring needs across multiple job disciplines continues to be an important focus for employers across the country in July with several tech roles leading the way. 
 
Software Developers and Engineers: 44,824 
IT Project Management, Data Analysts, Emerging Tech, other: 39,003 
Data Scientists: 18,509 
IT Support Specialists: 16,291 
Network Architects: 7,560 

Remote job postings by title 

Based on the job postings in July, software developers, IT support specialists, and data specialists are a few of the top roles for remote opportunities. 
 
Software Developers: 8,529 
IT Project Management, Data Analysts, Emerging Tech, other: 6,668 
Data Scientists: 3,539 
IT Support Specialists: 2,221 
Systems Analysts: 1,805 
Network Architects: 1,287 

Tech hiring by years of experience  

Whether you’re just starting out in your tech career or you’re an experienced professional, July job postings revealed opportunities at every level. This is helpful to give insights into which tech careers you could begin in or even blossom your existing career into. Interestingly, those with 0-3 years of experience make up over 20% of the job postings. 
 
Not specified: 34% 
0-3 years: 22% 
4-7 years: 29% 
8 years or more: 15% 
 
 

Active tech job postings not requiring a 4-year degree 

If you’re just getting started in tech or believe you would need a degree to get a career started, you’ll be thrilled to learn that isn’t actually the case. In July, 46% of active tech job postings didn’t specify a four-year degree requirement. To boost your earning potential without a degree, explore deepening your skillset by taking the next step in your career pathway. 
 
Network Support Specialists: 87% 
IT Support Specialists: 72% 
Network and Systems Administrators: 52% 
Database Administrators: 50% 
Web and UI/UX Designers: 50%
