Swish! Students at Boston’s Mildred Avenue K-8 School and Community Center can thank one of CompTIA’s member communities for help in renovating its computer lab and teen space.
CompTIA’s IT Security Community, which focuses on challenges and opportunities in the IT security field, donated $5,000 to the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation, which allocated the donation to its Player Choice Grant, a grant that allows members of the Celtics roster to vote on where the money should go. For the 2012-2013 season, Boston Celtics decided the CompTIA donation should be used to improve the computer lab at the Mildred Avenue Community Center, which opened adjacent to the Mildred Avenue Elementary School in 2003. The state-of-the-art facility also includes a gym, classrooms, a dance studio, a 250-yard competition-sized swimming pool with balcony seating, a staged auditorium and a recording studio.
Each year, CompTIA member communities make donations to deserving IT-related charities. Money for the donations comes from the Creating IT Futures Foundation, the philanthropic arm of CompTIA.“The Shamrock Foundation understands the importance of community involvement when it comes to IT education, and we wanted to be a part of that,” said Scott Barlow, chair of the IT Security Community, who helped deliver the check to the Boston Celtics. “We make sure the members of the IT Security Community have a say in where our donations go, and that falls in line with what the Boston Celtics are doing, too. This is an important project for them, which means it’s an important project for us.”
